Youth Action Committee (YAC)

The Positive Space Network 2SLGBTQ+ Youth Action Committee (YAC) is a youth-driven leadership committee made up of 2SLGBTQ+ identified and allied youth ages 12-24 from across Halton Region.

What does the Positive Space Network Youth Action Committee do?

  • YAC members are responsible for helping plan Halton Pride Week, which takes place June every year
  • YAC members help vision and plan future 2SLGBTQ+ youth programs
  • YAC members represent 2SLGBTQ+ youth voices on various projects happening throughout Halton Region

What will I get out of being part of the YAC?

  • Opportunities to make friends and find community with other 2SLGTBQ+ identified and allied youth
  • Volunteer opportunities, work experience, and/or high school volunteer hours
  • Opportunities to develop tons of facilitation, mentorship, team work, leadership, communication skills
  • Opportunities to find out about local resources and meet people from other youth services in Halton

What are your responsibilities as a YAC member?

  • Attend meetings twice a month from November to June
  • Attend a weekend of training and team building in November – where you will learn about 2SLGBTQ+ identities, anti-oppression, leadership, and get to know other YAC members!
  • Help contribute to events and spread the news

Please note we will be closing the application for YAC 2020/21 on September 30th 2020.

Land Acknowledgement

In honour and in solidarity with the youth with whom we work, we gratefully and explicitly recognize that the Positive Space Network operates on the stolen lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosunee, Neutral nations and Mississaugas of the credit. This land is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

This territory is covered by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant which is an agreement between the Haudenosaunee confederacy, the Ojibwe confederacy and allied nations. This agreement is a commitment that no one group of people will take more than they need. We seek to restore this covenant, which has been broken.

It is important to remember that treaties are ongoing and relevant today as we make steps towards reconciliation. We are all treaty people.

As part of this land acknowledgment, PSN commits to take initiative by creating space and providing support for 2-Spirit and LGBTQ+ Indigenous youth in all of our programs. The question of how to best show up is ongoing.

We encourage every youth, parent and family that we serve, and every team member and community partner with whom we work to take time to learn about the lands where they live and work, and to explore this Indigenous Ally Toolkit and put these learnings into action today, tomorrow and every day thereafter.
